Sheila Smyth

Violin, Viola and Viola da Gamba

Sheila Smyth is a busy performer with many ensembles, both Baroque and modern, on violin, viola, and treble viola da gamba. She holds a Bachelor of Music in Performance degree from the University of Toronto. Sheila has performed with many early music ensembles in and around Toronto, including Tafelmusik, Aradia and Musicians in Ordinary, and as a chamber musician has performed on several concert series, including Luminato, Primavera Concerts, and Musically Speaking. As a modern violinist/violist, Sheila works with many orchestras throughout Ontario, is principal violist of Opera York and was part of the onstage band for Canadian Idol. She is also a founding member of Concordo and The Cardinal Consort of Viols.

As well as being a performer, Sheila is a dedicated teacher of violin and viola, and enjoys teaching both children and adults. She is very supportive and enthusiastic in her teaching practice, and is also creative in problem-solving to help students develop as musicians. She has taught at NTIM for over ten years and is a music coach at the Rosedale School of the Arts.

Jesse began studying violin with Sheila nearly 5 years ago, and has made steady progress from day 1. Sheila is flexible with her teaching style and is positive, patient and understanding. She challenges him, and always provides good guidance and advice. Jesse greatly appreciates that she asks him for his opinion about both his playing and repertoire, helping him develop his ear, self-confidence, and engagement in his learning. The school’s twice-yearly recitals provide us with the opportunity to perform together (with me accompanying him) – a special experience for us both.
