When a child reaches an age at which he/she is able to concentrate for a longer time, and has the ability to apply it to practicing on a regular basis, then the child is ready for music lessons. This age varies with children, and it is up to the parents to evaluate. Before this milestone, children benefit more from preparatory music classes, in which they have more physical freedom and learn through playful movements and singing.

Often, children will express a preference for an instrument, and it may be a good idea to start them on something they are interested in. Of course, the piano cannot be altered in size, but other instruments, such as the violin, cello and guitar can be obtained in sizes proportionate to the student. Teachers are happy to guide parents/students in purchasing or renting the appropriate instrument.

Cost of lessons: $30.00 - $32.50 per half-hour Registration Fee: $45.00

Lessons are paid in advance for four terms of 10 weeks each from September to July. A Registration Fee of $45.00 is due upon Registration every year for new and returning students.

Students are encouraged to prepare for recitals, which are held twice a year, in December and in June. They can participate in master classes, festivals and auditions. These opportunities greatly enhance and develop performance skills and allow students to share their artistic vision with others.

Both our student and Faculty series recitals take place in the Recital Hall of the Briton House Retirement Centre at 720 Mt. Pleasant Ave. The hall contains the Institute's grand piano and the seniors of the centre are delighted to be regular audiences at these events.
