Nebyu Yohannes

Nebyu Yohannes is an achieved trombonist, arranger, and songwriter. After moving to Toronto from Vancouver, Nebyu attended Humber College where he completed his Bachelor of Music degree. While at Humber College Nebyu had the privilege of performing alongside notable artists like Jack DeJohnette, John Scofield, and Joe Lovano to name a few, and also receiving some of the top awards the college had to offer, like the Gordon and Anne Wragg Music Scholarship. Since completing his degree, Nebyu finds himself playing alongside local Toronto artists and groups like Quique Escamilla, We Are All, and Makes Shapes, and at the same time leads his own ensemble (the Nebyu Yohannes Group). Nebyu is influenced by Fiona Apple, Frank Ocean, Jimi Hendrix, and John Coltrane.

Jesse began studying violin with Sheila nearly 5 years ago, and has made steady progress from day 1. Sheila is flexible with her teaching style and is positive, patient and understanding. She challenges him, and always provides good guidance and advice. Jesse greatly appreciates that she asks him for his opinion about both his playing and repertoire, helping him develop his ear, self-confidence, and engagement in his learning. The school’s twice-yearly recitals provide us with the opportunity to perform together (with me accompanying him) – a special experience for us both.
